Ice cube bag – a cold success
On a hot summer’s day Erling Vangedal Nielsen sat at his summerhouse with some friends. They needed some ice cubes for their drinks. They had a freezer but no ice cubes. Ice cubes were a must so out of a plastic bag Erling found a solution that got them the ice cubes. The solution was so brilliant so 20 years later it was a worldwide success.
"The most important thing I have accomplished with the ice cube bag is not to be able to buy any car but the freedom to do what I want and to carry out new ideas- Erling Vangedal Nielsen"
Erling Vangedal Nielsen spent a couple of years to complete his invention and in 1978 the first bags were sold from his own company.
The potential of the ice cube bag was larger than Erling’s own company, Vangedal Plast A/S, could handle so following a smaller test-production he contacted a company called Schur. At first Erling Vangedal and Schur entered into a license agreement that was profitable for both parties. In 1989 Erling Vangedal sold all the rights to the invention to Schur.
The ice cube bag is now sold in large quantities all over the world.
But the story doesn’t end here for Erling Vangedal Nielsen. Thanks to the license agreement Erling got more time for his creative capabilities. He is continuously creating new products, e.g. filters for coffee and tea, his popular salad sling and not the least the fruit bag that keeps fruit fresh for more than 24 hours.
